septic system care & maintenance

Pump your tank!

The best way to maintain the septic system is to periodically remove the accumulation of solid waste inside the septic tank.  Experts suggest having a routine maintenance pump and inspection done every 2.5-3 years unless your system receives a normal than high volume of usage.  Visual inspections are done during pumping as well so that you can get a jump start on any issues that may arise with your septic system.

Watch what you flush

One of the biggest contributors to plumbing blockages and septic system failures is "flushable" wipes.  Manufacturers of these products do not clarify that they DO NOT break down and will clog the lines and tank interior.  The waste in your tank creates it's own bacteria system that work to break down the waste if cared for properly.  Use septic-safe toilet paper, and do not flush heavy chemicals, paints, medicines, or any other potentially harmful items that will not break down inside the tank.  Feminine products should never be flushed down the lines either.

Maintain your drain field

It is crucial to know where your drain field is located on your property.  Leach lines and seepage pits should never be driven over, and trees and invasive vegetation should not be planted as they can perforate the pipes and roots can cause significant damage leading to costly repairs.  Know where your drain field is located and educate yourself on best care techniques for your system. Unsure where it is located? Unsure what sort of drain field your system has? Give us a call! We can locate and guide you on proper maintenance and care to prolong the life of your system.

Flushable "Additives"

Many manufacturers proclaim adding their products to septic tanks breaks down the waste and prevents you from requiring to pump out the tank. There has been no research to support such statements, and these products could do more harm than good.  Watching what you flush down the lines and pumping the tank is the best way to ensure proper septic system functioning.

Septic Tank Inspections

Regular inspection of the septic tank and drain field is the best way to optimize function and prolong the life of the septic system.
